MAMMATUS Biography (at Progarchives):
Taking the name of the heaviest cloud on our planet, the four-piece Santa Cruz band
named Mammatus try to live up to its name. They are a Stoner Rock band taking
influences from Black Sabbath, Hawkwind and many others from the same context of
sound. They were formed in early 2005 and started playing in pubs and living rooms.
They then recorded their debut in their own garage with no money and little resources.
Their sound caught the attention of several record companies and released their self
titled debut in 2006. With an album out people around the world got a taste of what
Mammatus has to deliver. Heavy guitar riffs, improvisations, psychedelic passages,
forest, dragons. You name it, Mammatus has it.
This band is recommended for fans of heavy psychedelic bands like Hawkwind and fans of
the Stoner Rock genre.
"The Coast Explodes" - Album review:
Mammatus's second album "The Coast Explodes" straddles the line between psychedelia
and hard rock while introducing more progressive aspects. The music is heavily
influenced by both the power and complexity of the natural world and the ongoing
battles of light and darkness.
"Excellent Swordfight" is a continuation of the same story told in the debut's "Dragon
of the Deep". "Pierce the Darkness" explores being a light in a dark world. "The
Changing Wind" is a pipe-led psychedelic folk tune that could have been sited by
Ghost's Second Time Around and the shanga vibes of the forest in the Autumn. It
unfurls into the title track which encapsulates the massive fury of the ocean.
PRESS:
"The same heavy, spastic psych as Acid Mothers Temple, Psychic Paramount, Comets on
Fire and Green Milk from the Planet Orange." - Dusted Magazine
"While Mammatus hasn't been around for very long, they deliver on just about every
level. Their selftitled debut draws heavily on the cornerstones of mind warping, heavy
music - Hawkwind, Sleep, Floyd, Sabbath... It's both heavy, soothing, and altogether
engrossing. Bottom line, if you want your head caved in and you want to feel really
good about it, get this..." - StonerRock.com
